I want to encourage everyone here to join the American Glass Guild, and to consider attending their summer conference in Pittsburgh this year. American Glass Guild - Pittsburgh 2012 Conference - Press Release
The American Glass Guild (AGG) is pleased to announce its seventh annual conference to be held July 20-22nd, 2012 in Pittsburgh, PA, with workshops on Thursday July 19th and a stained-glass tour on Monday, July 23rd.
The Keynote Speaker will be noted historian, Albert Tannler, who has written extensively on Charles Connick and other stained-glass artists. Other speakers include national and international stained glass artists, art historians and conservators: Kathy Barnard, Art Femenella, Beth Leslie Glasser, Mary Clerkin Higgins, John Kelly, J. Kenneth Leap, Reiner Meindl, Troy Moody, Sylvia Nicolas, Betti Pettinati-Longinotti, Vic Rothman, Julie Sloan, and James Yarnall, with workshops by Charlie Lawrence, Dan Maher, and Nick Parrendo. Topics include Artists Work, Isothermal Glazing, Working with an Architect, John La Farge in Pittsburgh, Silver and Copper Stains, Antique Glass – an Inspiring Material, Working on a Monumental Scale, Surviving as a Free-lance Artist, Influences of the Studio Art Movement, Kiki Smith and the Eldridge Street Synagogue, Agenda-free Standards and Guidelines, among others. There will be site-visits to see the best of Pittsburgh glass, including work by Connick, Sotter, and Rudy; portfolio reviews by working artists; and a free Drawing Workshop with Debra Balchen.
For the first time the AGG will have a members' juried exhibition, with Virginia Raguin organizing the jury. Sketches are to be submitted to info@americanglassguild by January 31st along with five images of past work. Artists will be notified by February 15th and must have panels ready by July 1st. Consult AGG website for more details. Exhibitors must arrange for hand delivery and pick-up of their panels. The AGG cannot be responsible for any aspect of shipping on either end. Objects are displayed at exhibitors' risk.
Our annual auction benefits our educational mission and the AGG's James Whitney Scholarship Fund, which provides support for training, workshops, and conference attendance both in the US and abroad. In 2011 the auction raised $21,000. Information on previous recipients is posted on the AGG website, where next year's application (due March 15th of every year) can be downloaded.
