Cold working Course - Vancouver, B.C.

Shiny Bad - Texture Good!

Learn from an expert in the best equipped studio in Canada. February 9-13, 2008

In this class we will start with the fundamentals and proceed to the more advanced methods of cold working and finishing glass. Our emphasis will be on gaining confidence, comfort, and competence on each of the machines as well as learning the variety of finishes and possibilities that can be achieved with these tools. We will use our time to develop cold working strategies and learn how to use the cold shop tools efficiently and to their utmost capacity. We will also look at methods to achieve one's own desired results in the least amount of time with the smallest amount of effort.

We will work on 4" X 106" Wet Belt Sanders, an 18" and a 24" flat lap, a Denver Single Arbor Grinder, a Covington Glass Lathe, a QEP 10" glass saw and a Foredom Engraver with Diamond bits. We will work with 6" Diamond wheels, 4" Diamond wheels, an 8" Expanding Drum Sander with Diamond belts, and Silicone Carbide belts on the Wet Belt Sanders. We will use 4" and 5" pneumatic grinders with a variety of diamond pads. We will work with Cork wheels with Pumice and Felt wheels with Cerium. We will also sandblast and fuse.

This course will familiarize and prepare students to take their work to a more professional finish, and help them decide what equipment they need to achieve their aims in cold working.

Mr. Schmuck was fortunate enough to work with Klaus Moje, Kirstie Rea, and Scott Chaseling while the Roll Up technique for blowing kiln formed Bullseye glass was being perfected in the Glass Workshop at Canberra. Mr. Schmuck was also blessed with the chance to learn cold working with maestro Stephen Procter before his passing. Mr. Schmuck has subsequently built a studio in Santa Cruz, CA, for the Roll Up, for kilnforming, and for cold finishing. Mr. Schmuck teaches internationally and recently did a series of coldworking classes at Wired Designs in San Antonio, Texas.
